I have great memories of Totara Flats - it is an awesome spot. It's situated on the Wairarapa side of the Tararuas, up the Waiohine river just before you come to the Waiohine Gorge. There is a nice hut among the trees on the left of the river at the foot of the dark spur.
This is by no means an idealised image - in fact, I toned down the colors considerably and created a moody feel. On the weekend I was there, we had brilliant sunshine and deep blue skies. The tussock on the flats was an amazing color of gold, and the cream heads of our native pampas, the Toe toe - Arundo conspicua - gleamed in the sun - truly a memorable place.
