The Butler River on
the West Coast of the South Island is one of many rivers that descend from the high Southern Alps.
This range runs
the full length of the South Island and lies close to the western seacoast, so the beds of these rivers are usually pretty steep.
These are great
boulder rivers and as you climb higher the shingly, rocky stream bed gets more and more interesting and harder to navigate, with big boulders and cascades.
