Original Pencil: "Gouland Downs 1" Nelson

I created this drawing at the request of the NZ Forest Service as the cover for their publication "Plants of the Gouland Downs and Perry Pass", using a photograph they supplied me with, but in the final analysis they decided not to use it so I got it back.

I really enjoyed doing it and I decided to enter it for the NZ Academy of Fine Arts Summer Representational Exhibition the following year. The NZAFA Jury accepted it for the Exhibition and it sold there, so the Forest Service's loss was my gain. Six years later when I held my first solo exhibition in Hamilton, I did another version of this and used it as my exhibition invitation design. That one subsequently sold at the NZAFA New Year Exhibition in 1999, so I guess people like it as much as I do.
