Original Acrylic:
"Bream Bay, Northland".

Bream Bay is the outer harbour bay of our main Northland city, Whangarei.     It lies on the Eastern seaboard of Northland and has a beautiful big sweep of coast with sandy beaches. This painting is from the Ruakaka side looking out across the bay towards the Hen & Chickens Islands and the open sea beyond.

On the left is the glory of our Northland beaches, the Pohutukawa tree - Meterosideros excelsa - which in the summertime decorates our Northland coastlines with masses of its gorgeous red flowers.

Though I took quite a few photographs of this picture under varying conditions before it went to the person who commissioned it, I can only say that this record is totally inadequate to convey the impact of the painting, both in its size and the variety of colouring in the water, rocks, and trees. The sea in fact contains a myriad of blues, greens and purple; the rocks all show the details of their structure with light, shade, and color contrast, and the Pohutukawa trees have a variety of greens with the first touches of the crimson flowers to come as summer advances.     This experience brought home to me what a poor substitute photography can be for our own powers of vision.

Acrylic on board, "gallery wrapped" - 72in x 25in x 1.75in.

Commission - Auckland NZ.
